Often times you will hear how easy it is to start up an online
home based business...just sign up for a few programs and set up
a website and then just watch the money come rolling in. Sorry to
burst your bubble folks, but it just doesn't happen that easily!
In the course of my home business coaching activities, I have
often found that people head into the startup phase of their
online home based businesses with a wildly optimistic and
unrealistic mindset.
There is a misconception that you can come online and set up an
Internet based business and be making big money within a few
days. This is absolute hogwash and it has not been my experience
nor the experience of anyone I have come in contact with through
my online business activities.
The harsh reality is that there are more people who fail at their
home businesses than there are people who actually succeed.
Newcomers to the world of online home based business are not
usually aware that they may actually have to work harder at their
home businesses than they did at their traditional jobs. They are
typically not aware of the many hours of marketing time that they
will need to put in to be successful.
Many people that are new to online marketing also make the
mistake of thinking that a single marketing strategy will
suffice. Naturally, some avenues will produce better results
than others, but I have found the best course of action is to
adopt a broad based approach to your online marketing by
spreading your time and resources over several different methods.
If you are new to Internet marketing, you might be well advised
to take a course to find out what is required of you to be
successful in an online business. It does not matter what type of
business you are starting, if it is online, it must be marketed
online, and possibly offline as well.
It always amazes me how frequently people that start an online
home based business actually believe that they can get rich by
doing absolutely nothing, or at least with very little effort.
These are otherwise intelligent people. Why would they believe
this? My conclusion is that they believe because they want to
believe. They believe because they see claims to this effect
everyday and everywhere on the Internet. They are told that it is
possible. They not only want to believe it, for their own
reasons, but they need to believe it.
In my opinion, you need to give yourself at least a year to make
an online business get some traction and start to generate some
meaningful income. The proper mindset is to think long term,
not instant gratification.
I am always surprised at the number of people who drop out of
their online home based business after the first month or two.
I ask myself, what do they expect, miracles? You probably
wouldn't bail out of offline business after a month so why would
you expect an online business to be any different?
Aside from the fallacies of instant riches without any effort,
the expectation of a free ride is a frequent misconception of
many that think they want to start an online home based business.
If you're afraid, or unwilling, to invest a little money to start
your own business...you are not looking at a home based
business...you are looking at a work at home job. If you want to
make money online, you must also be willing to invest in
yourself. It's as plain and simple as that.

Start-ups are a field better left to distributors with many years on their back and great knowledge of the people who are the movers and shakers of this industry, as well as the necessary connections that would provide them with more information.
The only exception is if you really trust and know well the person who tries to sponsor you into one. But even in that case don't forget that there is always the possibility that he may be wrong.

How to Buy a Business Opportunity
We all know that ideas are a dime a dozen. While ideas may be cheap, good ideas can be rarer than free diamonds. If good ideas were that easy to come by, however, ask yourself why you didn't invent the personal computer or compact discs.
So consider buying a good idea for your business. Besides buying a franchise or an existing business, or starting a business from scratch, you can buy a business concept. You may see some of these concepts referred to as business opportunities and easy ways to make extra money.
With a franchise you're buying a name and concept by paying an up-front franchise fee and a continuing percentage of your earnings. With a non-franchise business opportunity you also buy a concept by paying an up-front fee for your easy ways to make extra money. You may also pay the seller for equipment and supplies. What you don't pay is a continuing percentage of your earnings.
While you do get a business idea that is a turnkey business where you can immediately begin your operations, you don't get many of the things that come with a franchise. Sometimes these things are good, sometimes not so good.
Understand that there is no requirement to pay any ongoing fees. Once you pay for the business opportunity, you're basically on your own. You may continue to order supplies from the seller, but there are no other fees. With a franchise you have a continuing obligation to pay franchise fees.
There are also no restrictions. With a non-franchise business you aren't required to conform strictly to a franchiser's code of operations. You have more flexibility to run the business as you see fit. And because you don't have the ongoing fees of a franchise, you have more money in your pocket to do with as you wish.
There are other things that aren't quite so favorable for a business opportunity. First is the trade name. With a non-franchise business you get the concept, such as college scholarship matching in which you help students locate scholarship opportunities, but you probably won't get the trade name, such as American College Planning Services, a franchise providing the same type of service. Although you can negotiate to keep the current business name, in most cases, you run the non-franchise business under the name you select with your easy ways to make extra money. You must establish your own name recognition.
You also don't get a protected territory. Unlike a franchise opportunity, the seller of a non-franchise business may sell the same business opportunity to your next-door neighbor, unless you have a non-compete clause in your contract.
It also lacks extensive training. You may get some reference guides or tapes to instruct you in how the business operates, but the seller of a non-franchise business opportunity will not show you how to run a business in general. You have to pick this up on your own. There may be a trade association that covers your business type that can help you.
